In the year 2222, during excavations in Madrid, numerous inscriptions on its walls were discovered in a disused sanitation gallery. Initially, and as a result of the first investigations, it is believed that they were written by a technologist from the beginning of the 21st century who was ostracized by the powers that be that prevailed at that time.

The document that we now present is a recapitulation of errors in the design of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) as a consequence of the low prices that public administrations contracted for the Tender Projects of the plants in the 2010s.

To avoid losses, the engineers Special Data entrusted the design to the intern who was dedicated to cutting and pasting old projects that contained numerous errors in their design.

Error number 1: considering that the equivalent inhabitants (eh) are lower than the real inhabitants of the agglomeration. By definition, the eh include the polluting load of the real inhabitants plus that of industry and services. Consequently, the eh will always be equal to or greater than the actual inhabitants.
Error number 2: not compartmentalizing the pumping wells into two bodies to facilitate maintenance and cleaning tasks and avoid the discharge of untreated wastewater.

Error number 3: having, for WWTPs of less than 20,000 pe, a double roughing system (fines and sieving). 21st century technology ensured that 3mm sieves could process all the waste that came with the wastewater.



Error number 4: having manual reserve grates and sieves. In the 21st century, the trend was the automation of facilities to reduce dependence, in operation, on the human factor.
Error number 5: in the design of the bacterial beds, not having water recirculation at the head of the beds to ensure that, at night when the wastewater flow was low or absent, that the biomass of the filter It is humid and in good condition to purify the residual water when it arrives first thing in the morning.
Error number 6: not allowing, in an activated sludge process, all the ponds to work with all the settlers.

Solution: change the location of the manhole and communicate them with each other.

Mistake number 7: making biological processes not independent. Either by collecting the mixed liquors at the exit of the biological ponds, or by having a single external recirculation.

Solution: compartmentalize the recirculation pumping and have as many recirculations as there are biological ponds.
